Abstract

Problems that surface in the development of materials property data bases are many and solutions are varied, with different data base applications and designs. This results in incompatibility among existing data bases. This paper discusses the essential requirements of on-line materials property data bases and the building blocks of various file systems. Areas covered include the types, basic structures, and various forms of the building blocks and the solutions to the problems encountered in the construction of the file systems. Under this scope, three file systems—namely, the materials files, variables files, and data files—are reviewed in terms of the basic building blocks. It is made clear that integration and transformation of data bases are possible if and only if the data bases under consideration are constructed with fully resolved building blocks. With the above considerations in mind, activities of standards establishment and data base development can be carried out in parallel.
