Abstract

Designing and using a computerized materials property data base for composites include the very difficult tasks of fully and uniquely identifying each material and characterizing the material properties in a way that will satisfy the needs of all potential users. Approaches to meeting this criteria are discussed, including abbreviated methods of identification, combining computer fields to fully and uniquely identify both research and commercial composites, structuring data so that different functional groups can access varied subsets, integrating test conditions into the data base, and presenting data in more effective graphic form, when applicable. A multitiered system for assessing data quality is also discussed.
