Abstract

The field of terminology as we know it today arose from the need to name the objects and ideas associated with the different branches of human activity. In Canada, the existence of two official languages, as well as the demands of political, commercial, and cultural exchanges with a variety of countries in numerous languages have led many organizations and companies, both public and private, to retain the services of terminologists in order to standardize their in-house terminology and provide support to translators in their daily activities. Twenty years into its existence, terminology is a young, dynamic field. To their credit, terminologists, whose work focuses on the search for the right term, are now being invited by Canadian translators and interpreters to enter their professional associations.
