Abstract

This paper presents field trials with polymer modified asphalts (Novophalt and Styrelf). The modified binders were used in wearing surface course, binder course and base course and compared with non modified asphalt. Field evaluation included visual survey, roughness measurements and deflection measurements. Preliminary results of these field trials indicated that no significant improvements in pavement performance were obtained. The one year evaluation (after test track construction) under heavy traffic movements did not show significant rut development for either polymer modified or non modified bituminous sections. However, it is planned to annually investigate and report the extent of improvement in pavement performance which might occur in the future when using these polymer modified asphalt binders.
