Abstract

A project to survey the quality of installed loose-fill insulation in Georgia residences resulted in several hundred attic inspections to measure insulation thickness and density. Thermal resistance (R-values) for various types of attic insulation have been calculated using generalized correlations for apparent thermal conductivity as a function of density. The calculated R-values were compared with contracted R-values in an effort to assess the adequacy of current quality control measures. An analysis is presented of the measurements and calculations along with general observations about the installation in the attics that have been inspected.
