    Clinical Studies on Titanium and Stainless Steel Plates (LC-DCP). A Comparative Evaluation

    A comparative prospective clinical study with titanium commercially pure (cp) plates and stainless steel plates was performed. Both implant groups have the same LC-DCP design (Limited Contact-Dynamic Compression Plate). The plates were used for internal stabilization of mainly tibial fractures. The period of implantation averaged 18 months. After bone healing the implants were retrieved and metallurgically analyzed. The stainless steel implants showed more wear than the titanium implants. Fretting corrosion was detected only on the stainless steel plates. At implant retrieval, samples of soft tissues adjacent to the plates were excised. The histological evaluation showed a significantly thicker soft tissue reaction layer for stainless steel plates compared to cp titanium plates.
