    Abstract

    A fundamental mechanistic study of the alcohol phosphation process has provided a basis for development of a phosphation system which can be systematically varied to produce alkyl phosphate mixtures of predetermined composition. Conventional phosphation with either polyphosphoric acid or phosphoric anhydride typically produces the compositional extremes in terms of the ratio between the monoalkyl and dialkyl phosphate products. Use of both reagents will produce intermediate products in terms of the monoalkyl to dialkyl phosphate (MAP:DAP) ratio which vary as a function of the process. Parameters can be adjusted to produce MAP : DAP molar ratios from about 50 : 50 to 90 : 10 with low residual phosphoric acid and unreacted alcohol levels.

    In this preliminary communication, examples of the range of accessible compositions and limits of the technology are presented.
