Abstract

A life prediction model for fatigue loaded femoral prosthesis made from fiber-reinforced composite materials is presented. The model is developed based on a strength of materials approach/classical laminate analysis, and a critical element model, where biaxial mechanical and environmental loadings are taken into consideration. The model is shown to be capable of predicting the remaining strength and life of a composite femoral prosthesis.
