When restoring historic structures, a paramount concern is maintaining the integrity and character of the original structure. When original materials cannot be retained, replacement materials must be introduced. In this case, the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Historic Preservation Projects require that, “In the event replacement [of original material] is necessary, the new material should match the material being replaced in composition, design, color, texture, and other visual qualities.” For historic brick masonry structures, this means finding brick that provides the color, texture, size, and shape of the original brick. This paper discusses a means of selecting replacement brick for historic structure rehabilitation projects. The issues most important for a successful replication of the original brick masonry are addressed. The process is one that has applications to the selection of many building materials for historic structure repair projects.
