Abstract

Fretting fatigue of high strength steel was studied at various contact loads using bridge-type fretting cylindrical pads with various contact curvature radii. The fretting fatigue life showed a minimum at a certain contact load irrespective of the pad radius even though the frictional force increased monotonously with contact load. At a high contact load, the fretting fatigue life remained almost unchanged with a change in pad radius. At a low contact load, however, the fretting fatigue life increased with an increase in pad radius even though the frictional force was independent of the radius.
