    Abstract

    The aerosol barrier efficiencies of 10 widely different fabric samples were evaluated. The samples included woven, non-woven, and laminated fabrics. The main objective of this study was to establish the capability of the test scheme used to characterize such a wide range of fabric types for aerosol barrier efficiency. The challenge aerosol consisted of polystyrene latex spheres with a mean diameter of 0.477μm ± 0.005μm which were aerosolized by an aerosol generator coupled to a laser particle counter (LPC) which counts and records the aerosol particles upstream and downstream of the test fabric. Only particles in the range of 0.3μm to 0.5μm in diameter were counted and particle penetration was defined as the ratio of the particle count with the test sample in place to the particle count without the test sample. Results for the fabric group ranged from 0% to 54.3% particle penetration. The test was able to discriminate the fabrics into five statistically different sub groups. A major conclusion is that this relatively inexpensive and rapid test procedure works well for a broad variety of fabric types.
