Abstract

This study estimated the per load cost of laundering clothing worn for pesticide application, using recommended laundry practices and home equipment. Costs were based on a top-load (vertical axis) clothes washer with a 94.6 L (25-gallon) fill, hot wash with cold rinse, fuel costs of $0.0824/kWh and $5.71/GJ ($0.6024/therm), and 1 1/2 times the amount of detergent recommended by the detergent manufacturer for a normal load. The estimated cost per load ranged from $0.72 to $1.32 for depreciation of the clothes washer, and for fuel and detergent. The estimated cost of a no-load wash cycle to clean the washer ranged from $0.58 to $1.09.
