Abstract

Two models of a four-axle articulated vehicle are described; one is two-dimensional, and the other is three-dimensional. Attention is given to modeling the tandem-axle, leaf-sprung trailer suspension. Vertical dynamic tire forces measured from tests on the full-size vehicle are compared with predicted forces from the three-dimensional model, and good agreement is observed. The predictions of the two- and three-dimensional models are compared, and the conditions under which a two-dimensional model can satisfactorily simulate vehicle behavior are examined.
