Abstract

The authors performed laboratory testing to evaluate the behavior of the Monarch nozzle specified by the AAMA 501.2 leakage test method, and localized pressures generated by the water spray impact under various circumstances. Findings include: 1) The Monarch nozzle spray pattern is distinctly non-uniform. 2) The maximum pressures generated by the water spray are not at the center of the spray pattern, but in a concentric ring around the center. Under standard conditions, maximum pressures of 0.34 kPa (7 psf) were measured. 3) As the nozzle/target distance decreases, generated pressures increase significantly. At nozzle/target distances of 102 mm (4 in.), maximum pressures approached 2.15 kPa (45 psf). 4) Multi planar test areas like curtain wall and window systems with protruding mullions require special test techniques to assure similar test pressures are applied to the various exposed components.
