Abstract
Measurement of the aggregate bulk specific gravity in a hot mix asphalt mixture can have an impact on the performance of hot mix asphalt pavements. In particular, the measurement of the fine aggregate specific gravity has raised issues. The current testing method is lengthy and highly variable. This study was undertaken to investigate newer methods of determining fine aggregate specific gravity in hopes of finding a test method that could decrease both the test time and variability. Two new methods were investigated and compared with the standard method. The results indicate that both methods are less variable and take less test time to complete. However, though the timesavings may be significant during the mixture design phase, they may not be enough to improve quality control methods designed to allow tighter control over hotmix asphalt production.
