View License Agreement Source: STP1404-EB Abstract In this paper a novel fretting mode II wear test is presented. This test consists of an oscillating normal force superimposed on a constant force. The oscillating force can be applied over a range of frequencies. The principles of this fretting mode II test and the type of damage induced in this particular test and contact motion are discussed. The influence of the main fretting mode II parameters (force amplitude, test duration, etc.) on the materials degradation in the contact has been analyzed. Experimental data were obtained for different materials combinations, e.g., bulk WC-Co oscillating against alumina, hard coatings such as physical vapor deposited (PVD) (Ti,Al)N and PVD TiN oscillating against alumina and silicon nitride counterbodies, and a soft tin coating oscillating against a self mated one. The mode II fretting test results indicate that wear takes place in the slip region. Cracking and spalling out in the slip region are both observed in some instances. The critical normal force at which fatigue failure occurs, was determined for bulk ceramics and ceramic coatings. The evolution of the electrical contact resistance in the case of self-mated soft tin coatings tested under fretting mode II conditions is also reported.
