Black Box Data from Accident Vehicles: Methods of Retrieval, Translation, and Interpretation

Author(s): ["William Rosenbluth"]

This new ASTM monograph introduces detailed methods of analyzing information from automobile EDRs. EDRs in automobiles accumulate and store data from specific sensors and actuators which can be analyzed to help investigators determine what the vehicle was doing before, during and after an impact event. The methods discussed are illustrated with specific examples of the parsing, translation and interpretation of raw downloaded hexadecimal EDR data into engineering units useful to engineering investigators.

Also included are specific spreadsheet formulations to accomplish the importing, parsing, translation and interpretation of EDR data into useful engineering units.

In addition to providing primary translations and interpretations, such methods and examples can also help investigators verify and confirm translations and interpretations previously provided to them.
