    Abstract

A large number of inorganic elements are present in crude oil, coal, and oil shale materials. Many of them are detrimental to humans and the environment. The effects of these elements are discussed, as well as their fate after fuel utilization. Several other elements are purposely added to petroleum lubricants to enhance their performance in engines.
