THE PURPOSE OF THIS CHAPTER IS TO PROVIDE a basic understanding of the ignition mechanisms associated with the use of oxygen. This basic understanding is an integral part of selecting materials (Chapter 3) and designing systems (Chapter 5) for oxygen use. A systematic approach for evaluating ignition mechanisms in oxygen systems is described in Chapter 4.
