Abstract

As previously mentioned in connection with Eq 6, fracture toughness is first determined using the elastic-plastic J-integral corresponding to the point of cleavage instability. Then Eq 6 is used to convert the result into units of stress intensity factor. J-integral is separated into two parts, specifically an elastic component and a plastic component: Jc=Je+Jp
