One approach focuses on the thermal and moisture properties of the building envelope (exterior walls, roofs, and ceilings) needed to withstand the interior and exterior conditions. The second approach attempts to adjust the indoor climate to the thermal and moisture characteristics of the building envelope. This chapter deals with design tools for the exterior envelope only. Recommendations for indoor climate control can be found elsewhere in this handbook.
