OIL TANKERS, such as those in the Trans Alaska Pipeline Service (TAPS), can be subjected to fairly severe wave loadings. The severe wave loadings result in high cyclic stresses, and undetected cracks may grow by fatigue to lengths approaching the critical crack size of the hull steel.
