Abstract

ALTHOUGH THE TOTAL number of structures that have failed by brittle fracture is low, brittle fractures have occurred and do occur in structures. The following limited historical review illustrates the fact that brittle fractures can occur in all types of engineering structures such as tanks, pressure vessels, ships, bridges, airplanes, and buildings.
