First Paragraph

THIS CHAPTER IS CONCERNED with the selection and use of procedures for testing organic finishes intended for use on interior surfaces, exterior surfaces, or both interior and exterior surfaces. Coatings comprise more than “paints” since the latter are only one kind of coating as defined in ASTM Terminology Relating to Paint, Varnish, Lacquer, and Related Products (D 16): “coating-a liquid, liquefiable or mastic composition that is converted to a solid protective, decorative, or functional adherent film after application as a thin layer.” “paint, n, specific-a classification sometimes employed to distinguish pigmented drying oil coatings (“paints”) from synthetic enamels and lacquers.”
