First Paragraph

MOISTURE IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT factor in the perfor mance of wood and wood products. It affects the dimensional stability of wood and under certain conditions can cause major deformation. The extent of physical changes due to moisture depends on the density of the wood and the fiber orientation in reference to the direction of cut. Moisture is necessary for growth of decay fungi with consequent degradation of wood. Insect attack is also influenced by the presence of moisture.
