Summary on the Role and Analysis of Wear in Failures

Wood, FW
consultant, Melrose, FL

Abstract

An overview of the meaning of wear, how it occurs, its involvement in failures, and how it can be detected and evaluated is presented. Relevant definitions, surface characteristics, detrimental consequences, and techniques for investigation and analysis are reviewed. The intentions are to provide a basis for interrelating the case histories presented at the Symposium on Wear-Related Failure Analyses, and, together with the more specific case histories, to heighten the realization of the role that wear plays in many failures.
