Cyclic Stress-Strain and Fatigue Properties of Sheet Steel as Affected by Load Spectra

Abstract

Axial strain controlled fatigue tests were performed without buckling on thin 1.78-mm (0.070-in.) thick hourglass profile sheet steel specimens. Cyclic strain amplitudes up to ±0.015 were obtained. Material properties for cyclic 1stress-strain behavior varied considerably when obtained by using three different procedures. For fatigue resistance, an initial cyclic overstrain did not appreciably affect fatigue life; however, periodic cyclic overstraining did have a noticeable effect.
