Abstract

The application of the electrical potential method during a fracture mechanics test can give rise to a potential drop if the maximum load during fatigue precracking is exceeded. The effect is only observed if the fatigue fracture surface is very rough. The reason is a contact of the fatigue fracture surface caused by a lateral deformation in the direction of the crack front.
