Abstract

In the manufacture of torroidal core rings coated with epoxy powder coating material the smoothness of the coating is influenced by the flow and cure characteristics of the material. These characteristics of thermosetting powder coatings could not be evaluated with standard test procedures that were available for determining the properties of liquid coating materials.

Several test procedures were evaluated and a new spiral flow test was developed that indicated the relative performance of coating materials on the final product. The apparatus and procedure used are described in detail. Data are presented to demonstrate the reliability of the method and the effect of temperature and particle size on the results.
