Abstract

The scientific principles governing metal behavior will be considered in regard to creep, fracture, and corrosion processes as they relate to the successful development of materials for high temperature engineering applications.

In the past decade the emphasis in the design and development of land power plants has shifted from the aim of higher thermal efficiency to one of greater plant component reliability. This has brought about a corresponding need to understand existing materials more thoroughly, rather than to seek new material compositions. The consequence of this will be examined in the context of fossil fueled boilers, nuclear reactors of various types, and steam and gas turbines.
