Abstract
An ASTM Task Group evaluated the “Proposed Method for ⅝-in. (16-mm) Dynamic Tear Test of Metallic Materials.” Effects of testing machine type, impact velocity, specimen geometry, and testing variables on dynamic tear test results were determined. The method was found to be useful in reproducibly determining fracture energy and transition temperature. Difficulties were encountered in pressing the notch tip to the specified depth range, and the method has been modified.
Dynamic tear absorbed energy was not significantly affected by testing machine type or impact velocity. Small but statistically significant energy differences were found among the participating laboratories as a result of specimen preparation and testing variables. Increasing experience with the test method should make possible the reduction or elimination of these differences.
