Abstract

Successful growth of tissue and organ culture in commercial glass flasks requires a cleaning pretreatment. Auger electron spectroscopy is used to characterize the effect of such treatments upon the composition of the thin surface layers which affect cell attachment. This study considers a sodium-borosilicate glass treated, in particular, by rinsing and soaking in water and acidic solutions. The results should also prove useful for understanding the cleaning of similar glass surfaces for other applications.
