Abstract

To study self-consolidating concrete it is important to be able to characterize segregation resistance. In this paper, a segregation probe is introduced as a simple and fast method for testing static segregation of fresh concrete. The results of the segregation probe tests were verified using image analysis. A mechanics analysis was used to estimate the forces acting on the segregation probe and explain why the thickness of a paste/mortar layer at the surface of the concrete can be measured. Finally, use of the probe to determine robustness is presented.
