Abstract

Two rapid semiquantitative repeatable index tests are presented. The static swell/slake test and the dynamic dispersion test have been designed to classify intact transitional materials (mudstones, silts, clay shales, and compaction shales) with respect to their swelling and slaking behavior. Tests may be performed over a wide range of conditions by varying saturating fluid salinities to evaluate sensitivity of the intact materials to water.
