A Proposed Standard Test Method for a Free Fall Penetration Test

Abstract

A standard test method for a free fall penetration test is proposed. Rigid constraints on both mass and geometry of the drive weight and the anvil should provide a reliably reproducible force at impact and a reliably reproducible energy within equivalent sampling rod-sampler configurations. It is stated within the proposed new standard method that the apparatus can be used to satisfy the requirements of ASTM Standard Method for Penetration Test and Split-Barrel Sampling of Soils (D 1586). It is recommended that the proposed standard method be submitted to approval by consensus process under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D-18.
