Abstract

Although there are differences between stone columns and piles by definition, material, mode of failure, and load transfer, the criteria adopted for definition of the failure load are taken from criteria applied to piles. This study makes a short comparison between the behavior of stone columns and piles and discusses the philosophy of selection of the failure criteria of stone columns.
