Abstract

Two hand-operated compactors (a vibrating plate compactor and a rammer compactor) were instrumented to measure the dynamic contact force and energy transfer between compactor and soil. The instrumentation schemes, data acquisition techniques, and data reduction methods are described. The instrumented compactors were operated on two soils: a moist, silty sand and a dry, clean fine sand. The measured forces and energies are presented and compared to the manufacturer's ratings.
