Abstract

Compaction as a practical means of achieving the desired strength, compressibility, and permeability characteristics of fine-grained soils has been appreciated since the time early earth structures were built. In this paper, simple phenomenological relationships are proposed for estimating compaction characteristics, based on the analysis of compaction curves of fine-grained soils for different compactive efforts. A simple stepwise procedure is presented for adoption, the validity of which has been demonstrated from laboratory test data for this purpose.
