    Abstract

    The critical buckling load for a slender specimen of an isotropic, homogeneous material can usually be predicted adequately from fundamental strength-of-materials considerations. The extension of this approach to specimens of composite materials can be accomplished formally by using appropriate anisotropic elastic constants in the Euler buckling formulas, or by performing a more rigorous and substantially more complicated analysis based on plate theory.
