Composite Standards Activities of the Society of Automotive Engineers

Abstract

The Composite Committee of the Aerospace Materials Division of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is actively involved in the development and publication of composite material standards. Currently 150 specifications covering composite materials or processes are published, including 40 new or revised specifications being added in the past year. Participants in this composite specification development include representatives from leading aerospace and defense contractors, from the principal government military agencies, as well as from major manufacturers of these materials, representing the viewpoints of user, consumer, producer, and regulator.

Several problems confronting the composite community with respect to material standards are addressed by the SAE: (1) lack of standardization of repair procedures on composite parts and assemblies; (2) the effect of new federal government controls covering the export of technology that inhibits development of new material specifications; and that (3) insufficient procedures and resources for qualification of materials, parts, and procedures.
