Abstract
Examination of a high-alumina cement (HAC) concrete specimen made in the laboratory and exposed to several hundred cycles of freezing and thawing at Treat Island, ME, showed that its excellent durability was due to the fact that it was in fact air entrained. This was a surprise since it was supposed to be nonair-entrained concrete. The reason for this discrepancy is not known. In addition, X-ray diffraction examination showed that the phase conversion often associated with HAC had not occurred.
