New Guide for Identifying Landfill Gas Impacts to Groundwater at MSW Landfill Facilities

    (What is a Work Item?)

Developed by Subcommittee: D18.21 | Committee D18 | Contact Staff Manager

    1. Scope

1.1\tThis guide describes procedures for identifying landfill gas (LFG) as the source of groundwater impacts at municipal solid waste landfill (MSWLF) facilities. Identification of the source of groundwater quality impacts beneath a landfill (e.g., differentiating between leachate release and LFG migration) is critical for developing an appropriate, site-specific response to the problem. 1.2\tThis guide is based on recognized and widely used methods of data collection and analysis, and is applicable to characterizing groundwater quality impacts at operating and closed MSWLFs. It is important to note that, while intended to be reasonably comprehensive, the investigation methods described in this guide are not the only valid methods for identifying potential LFG impacts. The user is advised to consider the processes described in this guide, but also to consider all of the data collection and evaluation methods that are available and potentially applicable to each specific situation. 1.3\tThis guide provides a description of a systematic process for the collection of information, including identification of several options for information collection and use, but the guide does not recommend a specific course of action that is applicable in all situations. This guide cannot replace education or experience and should be used in conjunction with professional judgment. Not all aspects of this guide may be applicable in all circumstances. This ASTM standard is not intended to represent or replace the standard of care by which the adequacy of a given professional service must be judged, nor should this document be applied without consideration of the unique aspects of each situation encountered. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns that could be associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. The use of the word “Standard” in the title of this document means only that the document has been approved through the ASTM consensus process.
