1. Rationale
At the June 2005 meeting in Reno, the following question was asked: How is data treated if a specimen selfûignites during the 5-minute preheat period? After discussion, it was ascertained that ignition has occurred and the test should be completed in the normal and customary manner with the time of ignition recorded and reported. The proposed revision will include that concern as well as make Section 12.3 more "readable." Section 14.1.7 is being revised to include this phenomenon in the report.
At the June 2005 meeting in Reno, it was pointed out that some carpet tiles may have a different test result if carpet tiles of different dimensions are tested. If an 18-inch tile is subsequently tested as a 24-inch tile, burn distance may increase due to the absence of a "fire break" at the 18-inch joint. The tile may delaminate or shrink away from the joint creating an artificial fire break. These revisions to Sections 9 and 14 will alleviate the concern for all tile products and make E 648 consistent with the mounting procedures described in the ISO standard. There are also two editorial changes being made to the existing 9.1 text.
