WK88 New Test Method for Determining the Ultimate Strength of Advanced Ceramics Using Diametrally Compressed O-Ring Specimens at Ambient Temperature

Developed by Subcommittee: C28.01
See Related Work by this Subcommittee
Date Initiated: 02-07-2003

1. Scope

1.1 This standard test method pertains to the determination of ultimate strength under monotonic loading of advanced ceramics in tubular form at ambient temperatures. Note that ultimate strength as used in this standard test method refers to the strength obtained under monotonic compressive loading of O-ring specimens where monotonic refers to a continuous nonstop test rate with no reversals from test initiation to final fracture.
1.2 This standard test method may involve hazardous materials, operations, and equipment and does not purport to address the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard test method to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.3 This test method is specifically appropriate for advanced ceramics that are elastic, homogeneous, and isotropic. This requirement precludes the use of the test method for fiber-reinforced ceramic composites.
1.4 Values expressed in this standard test method are in accordance with the International System of Units (SI) and Practice E 380.
