1. Rationale

Charpy machines may be used to perform a variety of impact tests including Charpy testing, Izod testing, and instrumented striker testing. In each case, the Charpy striker must be removed from the machine to accommodate the appropriate replacement striker. Similarly, some laboratories have various types of anvils which must be removed and replaced periodically including conventional hardened steel anvils, carbide anvils, and in-situ heating/cooling anvils.

The current version of ASTM Standard E 23 states that when the striker or anvils (with a valid indirect verification) are removed from a machine, the indirect verification is invalidated. The proposed addition listed below will, subject to certain restrictions, enable a machine owner to remove and replace the same Charpy striker from a machine with a valid indirect verification without invalidating the indirect verification.

Some striker designs incorporate a fixed method of installation, such as pins, keys, bolts, or alignment fixtures. These types of strikers can be removed and replaced at a later date without affecting the performance of the machine. Data to support this fact may be found in a research paper entitled, ôEffects of Removing and Replacing an 8mm Charpy Striker on Absorbed Energyö, by Daniel P. Vigliotti and Joshua L. Vigliotti.
