1. Scope
1.1 This guide is intended for use with controlled temperature block calibrators that do not use test fluids and operate within the temperature range of -45 to 700C. 1.2 This guide describes the essential features of controlled temperature block calibrators for the purpose of thermometer calibration by direct measurement or the comparison method or both. 1.3 Detailed design and construction of controlled temperature block calibrators are not addressed in this guide. 1.4 This guide describes a method to define the working space of the calibrator and evaluate the temperature variations within this space. Ideally, the work space will be as close as possible to isothermal. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
The use of temperature block calibrators for temperature calibration is increasing. Although simple in concept, proper use for traceable temperature calibration can be tricky. This guide is intended to present instructions to clarify use and guide users. After successful completion of the standard, other E20 standards will be able to include temperature block calibrators when appropriate as temperature calibration tools.
