Work Item: ASTM WK5943 - New Standard Test Method for Determining Residual Stresses by the Incremental Slitting Method

Developed by Subcommittee: E28.13 | Committee E28 Home | Contact Staff Manager

Description Related Products
1. Scope

1.1 This test method covers the procedure for determining residual stresses through the thickness of isotropic linearly elastic materials.
1.2 The concept of this test method is in principle the same as Test Method E 837, but the use of a slit rather than a hole for removing material gives significantly different measurement capability.
1.3 The test method described here is applicable for specific specimen geometries and in those cases in which the stresses do not exceed ? of the yield strength.
1.4 Since the test method described here does cut the specimen into two pieces, it should be applied only in those cases in which either the specimen is expendable or the cut will not significantly affect the usefulness of the specimen. Moreover, the test method can deliver the stress intensity factor acting on the cut front as a result of the residual stresses, which is similar to the crack-tip loading in case of a natural crack in the considered part. The current E28.13 standards applicable to most engineering structures and materials only address near-surface stresses. A standard for through-thickness measurement of residual stresses in needed.
