(What is a Work Item?)

Work Item: ASTM WK5619 - New Specification for Mortars for Historic Masonry

Developed by Subcommittee: C12.03 | Committee C12 Home | Contact Staff Manager

Description Related Products
1. Scope

1.1 This specification covers repointing and reconstruction mortars for the restoration of historic masonry structures composed of the following materials: a) terracotta, b) fired clay brick, c) natural stone, d) cast stone, and e) concrete masonry units. 1.2 Usage should be based on a thorough understanding of the requirements for repair and restoration in the context of structure and durability. Given the fact that historic masonry encompasses virtually every type of masonry construction, the user of this standard is ultimately charged with examining all criteria and selecting the appropriate mortar formulation. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. The intent of this standard is to provide masonry practitioners and owners a method to specify a mortar that is appropriate to the historic structure. The current standard for mortar (C 270) is appropriate for modern materials but may not be so for historic. The building code references C 270, so an engineer is restricted in the range of materials to use. It is the hope that this standard will be adopted by model code bodies for historic structure repair.
