1. Rationale
ASTM E 662 is used for testing electrical and optical fiber cables. In fact, such testing is now required in such transportation documents as IEEE 45, IEEE 1580 (on ships),and NFPA 130 (on trains). However, ASTM E 662 does not have a test specimen preparation section specific for cables. Two ASTM test methods (ASTM D 5485 and ASTM D6113) contain specimen preparation sections for cables, and they were the source of the changes proposed. The entire section 8 (on Test Specimens) and the entire section 13 (on Report) are included, to put the changes in perspective. However, the only changes for this ballot item are in sections 8.3.2.5 and 13.2.1, two new referenced standards and the note and footnote renumbering. Note also that the test method standard contains abundant examples of non mandatory language. Such language must be eliminated from the standard, and a separate ballot item is being issued exclusively on elimination of non mandatory language, in parallel with this revision.
