    1. Rationale

    The ASTM Form & Style Handbook states, All technical standards should contain a Terminology section that includes definitions of terms or definitions of terms specific to a standard, or both. The purpose of this ballot is to add a Terminology Section to ASTM C1197 that references general mortar and masonry terms as well as to define the terms shim and spacer. The inclusion of additional specific terms to this section will be considered for future balloting. A similar ballot item is proposed for the corresponding sections in ASTM C1197, Standard Test Method for In Situ Compressive Stress Within Solid Unit Masonry Estimated Using Flatjack Measurements.
